Hi everyone,
While I spend a lot of time photographing local ravines at this time of year, the forests are equally rewarding.
Many of the forests here in Boso are cedar plantations. Cedar forests are often viewed unfavourably in Japan because of the pollen they produce, but they can also be surprisingly beautiful places. What interests me most is not the trees themselves, but the forest floor beneath them.

The tall cedars create a sheltered environment where ferns and deciduous plants thrive. During the rainy season, this undergrowth grows rapidly, covering the ground in layers of vivid green. The variety of shapes and textures creates an ever-changing landscape that rewards slow exploration.
The rainy season also brings many overcast days. While some photographers prefer bright sunshine, these conditions are perfect for forest photography. The clouds soften the light and remove harsh shadows, allowing the colours and details of the forest to stand out.

These two photographs were taken in local forests here in Boso. I hope they convey some of the quiet beauty that can be found in these often-overlooked cedar woods.
Thanks and enjoy!
