Late spring is a beautiful time of year here in the Japanese satoyama countryside. After the dry colourless winter and the sharp cold winds of early spring, the weather begins to settle. The air softens, and with it, the light. A gentle haze—often from pollen—filters the sunlight, giving the air a soft diffused quality. It’s an ideal moment for photography; soft light, rich colour, and a landscape full of activity. Today I’ve chosen three old photographs that convey that sense of spring air.
While late spring weather is settled and peaceful, there is a lot of activity in the countryside, both natural and human. So fast do the leaves change colour that you can almost see it, one day soft and pastel, the next day vivid and blinding. Birds and insects are constantly in motion, and the annual human rhythm returns as well. Farmers bring out their tractors, plough the fields, flood the paddies and begin the rice planting season. There is always something to watch.

I hope you enjoyed these images. If you’d like to see more of Japanese satoyama, take a look at the galleries section of my site.
Thanks and enjoy!
